Last year our friends from growing up turned 40 and we decided to celebrate at the Excellence Resort in Jamaica. We have been lifelong friends, some friendships in the group going on over 35 years. We love each other like siblings, and get on one another’s nerves like family, but going away together made that big 4-0 number so much more palatable.
We chose the Excellence in Oyster Bay, Jamaica because it’s an easy flight, the hotel chain had good reviews, this resort was pretty new, and we were excited to give it a try since we had already been to other resorts in Jamaica. It is about a half hour from the Montego Bay airport and we arranged a private shuttle for everyone arriving on the same flight.
When we pulled up to the resort they opened the big iron gates and we drove down a very long drive. The resort is situated on a peninsula which allows for stunning views of the sunset.
Upon arriving at the resort we were greeted with champagne and taken by golf cart to the Excellence club level concierge lounge. We chose to book the club level because the room category suited our needs and it allowed us the private check-in, a special pool for our use, and a restaurant only club level guests can dine at, among other benefits.
Overall we were very happy with our experience at this resort. The buffet was perfect for breakfast and we took advantage of a quick lunch to maximize our time in the sun and water. The other lunch places ran a little slow for our group, but it’s not a big enough negative for me not to return.
There were two main pools, one that was quiet and the other had activities during the day and a swim-up bar. There were always plenty of lounge chairs to be had and a lot of shade, which was delightful since it’s usually a scarcity at many pools I’ve been to.
The third pool is the one I mentioned earlier at the club building. This is a great spot for a late afternoon swim to watch the sunset.
The nightly shows were a little hokey, but you know what – when in Rome! So yeah, we danced, and I may or may not have done the limbo and practically laid down on the stage at one point. YOLO!
They have a little bar that has something going on every night. One night we did Karaoke, another we danced to the DJ, and the third we watched March Madness. I think this resort is great for couples, honeymooners, and girls’ getaways.
We all agreed it might not be the most lively resort around, but it had a chill vibe and we would go back. Although, this group could have fun anywhere as long as we’re together, so don’t take my word for it…. check it out for yourself!
